Seasonal Pests - Cluster Flies

Updated October 2014

We are now receiving enquiries along the lines of ‘I’ve just been swarmed on by thousands of flies in my loft!’…. ‘I’ve got hundreds of flies on the window sill but my house is really clean!’….’I must have something dead in my loft because I’ve got thousands of flies appearing – help!’

Don’t panic!

It’s probably one of several varieties of cluster fly that are looking to hibernate over winter.

See if you recognise these species.....

Pollenia rudis cluster fly

Pollenia rudis

Very distinct with a coat of golden hairs covering the thorax behind the head.

This is not a fly associated with filth, but a parasite of the earthworm.

dasyphora cyanella

Dasyphora cyanella

Looking very much like the Green Bottle, the Green Cluster fly lay their eggs in cow dung and are a more common sight in rural areas.

musca autumnalis - cluster fly

Musca autumnalis

The most common of the cluster flies encountered by Excel Pest Management, it is also sometimes referred to as the Face Fly due to it’s habit of sitting on the faces of horses and cattle to drink the sweat and tears, causing the animals a lot of discomfort.

It looks very much like the housefly but unlike the housefly, hibernates in vast numbers indoors.

If you are experiencing any problems with any of the above species, give Excel Pest Management a call for immediate assistance!
