Bees, Honey Bees, Bumble Bees ...
There are many different species of bees in the UK from masonry bees and bumble bees to honey bees, some providing honey, some not, some can sting whilst others cannot, but they all have one thing in common and that is that they are viewed with affection worldwide.
Certain bee species have been declining at an alarming rate in recent years, and as they play such an important role within our environment they should ideally be left alone as they will not sting humans if left undisturbed.
Bumble bees occasionally set up colonies in cavity walls, and whilst this may seem undesirable, they should be left alone as this nest will only last for one summer.
Bumble bees are social insects where the Queen and her worker daughters will live in this colony throughout the summer until her fertile females and males leave the nest to mate. These 'New Queens' for the following year will find somewhere to hibernate over the winter months before starting their own colonies. The Queen and the workers from the original nest will simply die off in the autumn leaving the nest to decay naturally.
