Carpet Beetle (Anthrenus verbasci)

Should you encounter holes in your clothing or other textile materials in your home, it may be worth checking out this pest as a suspect, as the varied carpet beetle has now surpassed the clothes moth as the main UK textile pest.

The larvae of this beetle, also known as 'Woolly Bear' are the stage that do the damage. Repelling light, the eggs are laid in areas often undisturbed, or old birds nest in roof spaces are a common source of an infestation.

The larvae are small (up to 5mm) and are covered in well developed hairs giving rise to their common name. As they grow they will moult their skins giving the impression that there may be more present than there actually are.

The adults will only feed on the pollen of flowers such as roses, but coming into contact with the larvae may cause irritation of the skin.

Vacuum away fluff from under beds, in airing cupboards, skirting carpets and bedding.
