Over 100 Years of Service
H. Pickup was founded in 1892 by Mr. Harry Pickup on Brook Street, Scarborough. The company initially produced cast iron gates, fences, railings, and gas lamps, while also meeting the needs of heating and structural engineering.
As the company grew—one of its most notable projects being the structural engineering of the Marine Drive in Scarborough—it relocated to larger premises on Roscoe Street. However, due to further development in Scarborough, the company later moved again to an even larger site, returning to Brook Street, which allowed for continued expansion.
H. Pickup also held the patent for the lock-and-lift drain cover, now found worldwide. By the 1990s, the company was supplying steam heating and hot water systems to hotels and homes.
In 1976, H. Pickup became part of a larger company and was divided into two divisions: H. Pickup Structural Engineers and H. Pickup Heating and Ventilation. Following this acquisition, the structural engineering division went into liquidation, and the parent company followed suit the following year.

New Management
Fortunately, former managers Ken Haigh, Geoff Dennis, and Mick Holmes were able to complete a management buyout in 1983, saving the firm and renaming it H. Pickup Mechanical and Electrical. Since then, the company has been providing mechanical and electrical design and installation services across North Yorkshire, Humberside, and the rest of England for over four decades.

Since being bought out by the new management, H. Pickup has been based at Durham House, Lower Clarke Street, Scarborough. Initially, the premises were rented; however, within three years, the company had purchased the entire plot, which included 3,000 square feet of office space and 2,000 square feet of workshop space.
By 1992, H. Pickup played a crucial role in the local industry, employing around 50 staff members to support their ever-growing workload.
