Our Services

Leadwork

Lead sheet is one of the oldest and most durable of roofing materials, with many roofs across England having some form of leadwork on their roof structure.

Unfortunately, the qualities of leadwork were not always taken into account when it was fitted to the roof originally, which can cause expensive problems for unwitting property owners.

Apex Roofing Yorkshire are qualified and experienced in dealing with a wide variety of roofing materials - from traditional materials such as lead through the more modern technologies involved in single ply roofing membranes.

Problems with leadwork can be a number of things but the most common are:

Movement – leadwork needs to be able to move; there can considerable change in the size of the leadwork from what it will measure in the warmer summer months to the harsh cold of winter. Frequently, lead work is 'over fixed' meaning it cannot fully expand or contract with the change in temperatures. This can lead to curling and lifting which can lead to damage and water seepage.

Fixings – fixings also need to be correct when it comes to leadwork on the roof. Lead is heavy and so fixings that are placed too near the edge of the material causes it to be 'torn' from what is known as wind lift. This is when wind is able to work its way under the lead material, lifting it, causing tears and rips. This again can cause water seepage and damage internal to your property.

Moisture – modern day buildings are becoming increasingly better insulated. Whilst this is essential for maintaining heat, reducing energy bills etc. if a building is not adequately ventilated, moisture can 'gather' in roof space internal to the property; over prolonged periods of time, this can have a corrosive effect on the leadwork. This can appear as a white powder on the underside of the lead.

Apex Roofing Yorkshire is a company with many years experience in all type of roofing maintenance, repairs and materials. Not only does leadwork need to be correctly installed in the first palce, it also needs expert repair and replacing. Contact us today for a competitive price for leadwork.

Cure It GRP Fibreglass

Robust and aesthetically pleasing to the eye. We can provide a non slip finish that is suitable for balcony's or roofs that have foot traffic. The entire roof surface and edge detail are formed as one continuous membrane which bonds to the new roof deck, effectively encapsulating your flat roof in a monolithic skin which contains no joints. This is ideally suited to simple or complex roof designs with lots of protrusions, such as sky lights. A Lead roof look alike reproduction is also possible if required.

We create a five layer glass reinforced polyester membrane, applied in situ upon the deck area which is cold formed without the use of flames or heat. Our installation process ensures that every roof is constructed to stand the test of time. First, we normally strip the old roof back to the supporting structure which is often timber joists, and then form a new roof deck using 18mm thick osb3 tongue and grooved boards. Once re-decked, we apply fibreglass profiled trims to all edges of the roof to ensure nice smooth lines. The main deck area of the roof is covered using a liquid resin based system which is reinforced with fibreglass matt. We use the industry standard weight mat 450gm, which gives a thicker and stronger layer with no joints. We then apply a finishing coat of tough protective polyester topcoat which can be specified in a colour of your choice.

Not only does it look good, it also comes with a 16 year guarantee and is maintenance free. In our experience a professionally applied fibreglass roof will last a lot longer than the 16 years. Compared to an average life expectancy of bitumen based materials, the life expectancy of a fibreglass roof is far greater than other flat roof products making it a cheaper option on a year by year basis.

Our fibreglass roofing system is applied using the latest techniques and technologies. We want our products to last so we work closely with one of Europe's largest resin manufacturers. We never use recovered or re-blended resins which reduce the quality and durability of the roof.

Firestone Rubbercover EPDM

WHY CHOOSE EPDM RUBBER FOR YOUR FLAT ROOF?

This list provides a brief list of the benefits of an EPDM Rubber flat roof to our customers.

PROVEN OVER MORE THAN 40 YEARS - You can rely on an EPDM Rubber roof because it's been installed successfully in the USA over more than 40 years. Unlike many other "newer" materials to the UK. Globally, EPDM is the worlds most used single ply roofing membrane. Over One Billion Square Meters of Firestone EPDM has been successfully installed, and is a testimony of pure excellence.

SEAMLESS - COMPLETELY RELIABLE - Most residential flat roofs are straightforward rectangles. This means we can install a single sheet of EPDM rubber to cover your roof. This means you don't have to rely on seams to waterproof your roof. Sheet sizes can be cut to fit your residential roof in just 1 piece. We have various roll sizes available.

LOW COST BEST MATERIAL AND ECO FRIENDLY TOO - The installed price of your roof will probably be similar to that of a quality felt roof and significantly lower than other "newer" systems. So you can have a flat roof to rely on at a fair price and also be very "green". For example, the conclusion of a report by ACTAC (the Association of Community Technical Aid Centres Ltd) named EPDM as the ‘best buy’ roofing membrane due to its’ low environmental impact in comparison to other membranes, high durability and re-usability. The findings of this report are published in the ‘Green Building Digest’ Issue 14. For further reference, the Greenpeace publication “Building The Future” names EPDM as the environmentally friendly choice for roofing membranes. Firestone Building Products’ commitment to the environment is reflected in the ISO14001 certified Environmental Management System implemented at all of our EPDM manufacturing plants.

VERY LOW MAINTENANCE COSTS - There should be no reason to maintain an EPDM Rubber roof. So long as the deck can withstand more weight you can even use an EPDM Rubber roof as a garden or you can install paving or decking over it. All you will have to do is wipe clean the edge trims now and again.

NEVER PERISHES AND REMAINS FLEXIBLE - EPDM Rubber is UV and ozone stable so it never perishes. It stays flexible and so can move with the building unlike static installation systems.

SUCCESSFUL IN VERY COLD AND HOT CLIMATES - EPDM rubber is installed successfully in Alaska and in the Middle East. So UK weather is never a problem!

VERY SAFE INSTALLATION - Because installation is a cold lay technique there is no requirement for any heat,

OVERLAY = SAVED MONEY - You don't have to remove your old roof. EPDM Rubber can overlay virtually any old roof so long as your roof decking and joists are sound. This saves you money and saves the environment by reducing debris from the work.

RELIABLE INSTALLATION - Because only trained contractors can install our systems you are assured of a reliable installation from both the materials and contracting point of view.

  • Garages, Extensions,Porches, Balconies, Dormers, Workshops in fact anything with a flat or low sloped roof.
  • Strong, Durable and literally in 1 piece . No on site seams or heat welds.
  • Guaranteed for 20 years by your independent local contractor, with a proven life expectancy of 50 years.

Chimney Pointing

It is important to keep a chimney stack weatherproof and in a state of good repair. If the mortar joints between the brickwork on your chimney are crumbling then the repercussions can be devastating. There are obvious aesthetic reasons for having a well pointed chimney however most importantly it ensures that water ingress doesn’t take place.

Chimney repair and re-pointing not only improves the look of the premises but also stops water damage costing you thousands. Pointing of the stack and re-bedding of chimney pots can greatly increase the efficiency of your fire or stove.

When crumbling pointing goes unchecked then you run the risk of complete chimney stack collapse.

Chimneys in Britain unfortunately suffer from extremes of temperature. The cold winter evenings bring frost and ice only to be followed by the intense heat from your fire or stove. This freeze, thaw, extreme-heat cycle puts the mortar joints under extreme environmental pressure resulting in eventual decay.

When you spot the signs of mortar decay it is wise to act swiftly to avoid the damage that water ingress can cause to the rest of your building. The chimney is a flue through the centre of your premises and connects most rooms so water damage here area can spread rapidly to other areas.

Repair Damaged Chimney Pointing

Chimney Pointing Damage

Crumbling pointing can quickly lead to the spread of damp throughout a building and, if not tackled early, then huge expense can occur through the necessity of a complete stack rebuild.

Sometimes the signs of chimney-stack damage become more obvious on the inside of the building. A water-stained ceiling close to the chimney breast can be a tell-tale sign. Occasionally this is apparent lower down the breast within a room. If damp has reached this far then the whole flue system will need to be water sealed.

If crumbling mortar is left then frost can cause major damage and cause the brickwork itself to crumble away. If you spot damaged pointing, crumbling brickwork and cracked or leaning pots then call us immediately.

Benefits of Chimney Pointing

Improve the looks of your property.

Improve your heating efficiency.

Stop water ingress.

Avoid chimney-stack collapse.

Slating & Tiling

If it is pitched roofing you are looking for then we are the roofers for the job. With our vast knowledge of the construction of both slate and tile roofs, you can rest assured that you will receive the roofing service that you deserve.

When we take on any project, whether it is a slate or tile roof, we always do everything by the book!

Every re-roof needs to have the full involvement of the local Building Regulations. This only applies when more than 25% of the roofs substrate is being removed and renewed.

Our service includes the removal of the old roof covering ie the underlay, laths and old slates or tiles also leaving the job clean and tidy when the project is complete.

We organise the ordering and delivery of all materials to site, keeping you well informed along the way. You will be well advised of the best materials to use, helping to make sure you get the quality job you want. We strive to use the best materials. All our pitched roofs are installed using treated laths and timbers through out the construction of the roof. We only use breathable underlay avoiding damp & condensation which is a common problem for roofs.

We don't use cheap slate or tile products, this will help give you a much longer life expectancy for your roof. We only install a breathable dry ridge system - it doesn't use mortar making the roof totally maintenance free. We also use a dry verge system which again is maintenance free without the use of mortar.

Finally when the all of the work is done you will receive a certificate from building regulations to confirm the job is of the highest standard. All that's left now is for you to sit back and relax!

We try and provide you with a maintenance free roofing solution so that you don?t have the inconvenience of regular roof repairs.

Below are some facts and information about slate and tile materials.

About Slate

Slate is a great roofing material which has been used on roofs for many centuries. Welsh slate is known as the best slate money can buy with a minimum life expectancy of 75 years. In many cases Welsh slate can be reused even after reaching its expected life of 75 years. Unfortunately Welsh slate is an expensive material often used on stately homes and royal residents, it has even been used at number 10 Downing Street.

Not to worry there are many other manufacturers of slate for roofing purposes. Many people opt for Spanish or Chinese slate which come at a far cheaper price and also have long life expectancies of between 60 and 75 years.

How is Slate formed?

Slate is a fine metamorphic rock. Its main constituents are quartz, chlorite, mica and calcite. Slate is formed when ocean or riverbed sediments are compressed and heated by the earth's crust.

About Tiling

Clay tiles have excellent environmental credentials and can achieve an A+ rating in the building research establishments (BRE) Green guide to specification. Coupled with the fact that clay is a natural material and has a very long life compared to many of its counterparts, making clay a clear choice for any roofing project.

Cement tiles are a more cost effective alternative to clay or slate and is available in a range of colours, profiles, shapes and sizes. Because of its lower cost to slate and clay, concrete has become a clear favourite for many of our clients.

Slating & Tiling

Slating and tiling encompass many different options, with tiles being divided into clay and concrete and then sub-divided into plain or profiled. Slates are divided into stone or man-made (Eternits).

Tiles

Interlocking concrete tiles are perhaps the most cost effective of the roof coverings. These are large tiles that cover around ten per square metre. They are laid as a single lap, side by side with the grooves on the underside of the one tile resting within those on the upper side of the preceding tile.

Plain tiles come in both concrete and clay forms with the hand made clay tiles being the most expensive. The coverage rate is around sixty per square metre, therefore resulting in an increase in labour. Additionally as the tiles are laid double or treble lapped (i.e. each tile has part of up to two other tiles beneath it) there is a great deal more battening needed and the weight on the roof is significantly increased. Plain tiles are often used for tile hanging.

Slates

Slates are usually laid treble lapped with each slate nailed to a timber batten. Nowadays slates are imported from countries such as China, Spain and Canada. Additionally there are many man-made slates on the market made from either fibre cement (Eternits) or moulded with a mixture of slate dust and glass fibre resin.

Perhaps the most expensive, but traditional roofing option is to use stone slates. These are large, heavy slabs of natural stone laid in slightly different patter.
